Sangkyoon Noh, <Particles>

Acrylic & Phosphorescent pigment on canvas, 259x388cm, 2018

  • Sangkyoon Noh uses phosphorescent pigments to enlarge and paint the fingerprints of himself and fourteen acquaintances.

  • Phosphorescent pigment is a mineral-based pigment that absorbs light when it's bright and emits it in the dark.

  • As darkness continues and the phosphorescent energy diminishes, the light flickers like a heartbeat and gradually fades away.

  • Just as every human advances toward death from the moment of birth, phosphorescent pigment emits light and gradually declines.

  • In the exhibition space where light and darkness alternate every minute, Noh's Particles(2018) continually repeats the cycle of life and death.

  • The moment when a fingerprint—humanity's unique mark and smallest unit—flickers with a bluish light in the darkness feels like viewing a cosmic scene while floating in the void.
